A set of Californian twins just celebrated their births on different days, months and years thanks to a rare event.

On Friday night, parents Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo of Greenfield welcomed a son named Alfredo into the world on New Years Eve at 11:45 p.m. local time.

Just 15 minutes later, just as the clock struck midnight, the couple welcomed Alfredo’s twin sister, named Aylin, on New Years Day.

Aylin was welcomed into the world at 5lb, 14oz, while big brother Alfredo weighed in at 6lb, 1oz.

In a press release from Natividad Medical Center obtained by PEOPLE, Madrigal explained his feelings behind the unique birthdays of his newborns.

“It’s crazy to me that they’re twins and have different birthdays,” she said. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”

Dr Ana Abril Arias, family physician at Natividad Medical Group, added: “It was definitely one of the most memorable births of my career.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are typically 120,000 twin births each year in the United States. Births represent just over 3% of all births, according to the organization.

Alfredo and Aylin now join three older siblings – two girls and a boy. Madrigal said his eldest son was thrilled to have a sibling and the rest of their family were thrilled to meet the new additions.
