Sidhu Moosewala was dressed as a groom according to a ritual followed in Punjab after the death of a young unmarried man. Parents had been planning Sidhu Moosewala’s wedding until two days ago, the family said.
The singer’s mother, who is also the village sarpanch, combed his hair, braided it and tied it up like Sikh men do. A turban was then tied on Moosewala’s head with a sehra, which a Punjabi groom wears before leaving for the bride’s house.
Moosewala’s father even fixed his son’s mustache, which expresses the attitude that Sidhu Moosewala showed in the hit songs he sang. He also slapped his thighs with his hand which is seen as an aggressive move against opponents in Punjab.
Sidhu Moosewala’s last trip was on his favorite tractor cart which was decorated as a wedding car as hundreds of fans lined up in front and behind the vehicle. His sobbing father greeted his son’s fans and took off his turban to show his gratitude for the love they showered.
Most of his fans, including young girls, were unable to approach the tractor to catch a last glimpse of Sidhu Moosewala as a crowd moved about half a kilometer.
As the funeral procession made its way to one of the singer’s farms, his fans shouted slogans of Sidhu Moosewala Zindabad as well as those condemning the Punjab government and the police. He was cremated on the farm and not on a cremation ground.
Many people even broke down the barricades around the funeral pyre but settled down after a while. Ardas or prayer was performed by Sikh preachers before his father lit the pyre.
CM Bhagwant Mann was due to visit the family on Tuesday evening, however, he had not filed this report.
Sources said that since there was a huge crowd and the singer’s fans were waving anti-government slogans, it was not possible for party leaders to attend the cremation for security reasons. .
Meanwhile, Congress workers covered his body with the party flag and State Unit Leader Amarinder Singh Raja Waring was also seen on the cart which carried Moosewala’s body to the cremation ground. SAD (Amritsar) leader Simranjit Singh Mann also reached the cremation and said that Moosewala was a soldier of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
