Right now, Gemma Chan is an actress who is trending more than most due to her starring role in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Eternals. While this is possibly the biggest blockbuster of his career, it’s far from his first notable role.
In fact, Gemma Chan appeared in various movies and TV shows regularly throughout the 2010s, including several MCU projects. As you browse through his impressive filmography, you’ll find an actor who finds a way to shine in every role. Ratings given by IMDb users can indicate what their greatest work is.
ten Eternals (2021) – 6.8
Due to the novelty of the film, Eternals is a movie that will likely see its ratings change a bit as more and more people see it. That being said, reviews have been mixed so far. Critics didn’t like it much, with the Rotten Tomatoes score the lowest of any MCU release.
That being said, the audience seemed to appreciate it a bit more. While the film is certainly an ensemble piece, Gemma Chan could be considered the lead role, playing the mighty Sersi. While there would be issues with things like pacing and character development, most of the cast, including Chan, seemed to be commended.
9 Captain Marvel (2019) – 6.8
As noted, Sersi is not Gemma Chan’s first role in the MCU. She is the rare actress to appear as someone else in another film in the franchise, landing a supporting role in Captain Marvel, the franchise’s first female-directed solo superhero film. He focuses on Carol Danvers as she becomes an incredibly powerful cosmic hero.
Captain Marvel was a huge hit, exceeding $ 1 billion at the box office and led by Oscar winner Brie Larson. Chan has played a relatively small role, playing a Kree sniper named Minn-Erva, who is hostile to Danvers despite technically working on the same team.
8 True Love (2012) – 6.9
Broadcast on the BBC network, True love felt like he was actually a bit ahead of his time. Miniseries became all the rage in most of the major streaming services and they are. In the same vein as Amazon Prime Modern love, this show featured a different relationship in each episode, with a few crossovers.
The cast included such figures as David Tennant, Kaya Scodelario, David Morrissey and Billie Piper. Gemma Chan was on one episode as Adrian (Morrissey) ‘s main love interest Kathy, and it is one of the highest rated episodes of the series on IMDb.
7 Crazy Rich Asians (2018) – 6.9
Chances are, most people recognize Gemma Chan for her outstanding performance in Crazy Rich Asians. A box office hit with an all-Asian cast, the film was a crossover success and Chan played one of the friendliest characters in history, Astrid.
The plot centers on a New York teacher named Rachel who visits Singapore and finds out that her boyfriend Nick is actually from a very wealthy family. Chan arguably stole the show as Astrid, a fashion icon who is one of the few people who is kind to Rachel and very close to Nick. His performance is one of the best in the film.
6 Submarine (2010) – 7.3
One of the first roles in the history of cinema of Gemma Chan came in 2010 in the dramatic comedy Submarine. Although this is a little-seen independent project and not one of Chan’s most important roles, it has been well received by critics. Chan played a woman named Kim-Lin.
Submarine centers on Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts), a teenager who wants to lose his virginity and break the romance between his mother and her ex-lover. The likes of Roberts and Sally Hawkins have bigger roles than Chan, but as one of his first roles in the movies, he’s still important in his career.
5 Watership Down (2018) – 7.3
There aren’t a ton of voice acting performances in Gemma Chan’s filmography, but the one that certainly stands out is Ship down. Based on a novel of the same name from 1972, this tale focuses on a group of rabbits with their own culture who must find a new home after theirs is destroyed.
Released on Netflix, Ship down received positive praise and boasted one of the most impressive voices around. Chan voiced Dewdrop but there was also James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, John Boyega, Daniel Kaluuya, Taron Egerton, and more. The show even won an Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Entertainment Program.
4 Fantastic beasts and where to find them (2016) – 7.3
Turns out, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t the first hugely popular movie franchise Gemma Chan has appeared in. A few years earlier Captain Marvel, she joined the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in fantastic beasts and where to find them.
A derivative prequel, this film followed a magizoologist with an affinity for strange creatures during his misadventures across New York City in the 1920s. For the most part, Chan had a small role as Madame Ya Zhou, a witch of the Magical Congress of United States, but she knew how to make the most of it.
3 Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) – 7.4
Earlier this year, Gemma Chan starred in her highest rated film according to IMDb users. Disney Adventure Raya and the last dragon is based on many Southeast Asian cultures, so it’s evident that the majority of the vocal cast includes Asian actors, led by Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina.
Gemma Chan (join Awkwafina after Crazy Rich Asians) voiced Namaari, incumbent Raya’s rival. The two go in search of the last dragon and through it they each learn to be better people. The film was highly rated for the story, the action sequences, the voice acting, and the beautiful animation style.
2 Dates (2013) – 7.5
Shortly after his appearance on True love, Gemma Chan appeared in a series with something of a similar premise. Appointment was created by the same person who made Skins and was a UK show where each episode centered around a different romantic date at different points in a relationship.
Although it only lasted for a single season consisting of nine episodes, Appointment featured a large cast which included stars like Andrew Scott and Oona Chaplin. Chan played a woman named Erica in two episodes, going on dates with people named Callum and Kate. Her screenplay was one of the best in the series as she ultimately revealed that she romantically prefers women over men.
1 Humans (2015-2018) – 8.0
For three seasons, Gemma Chan held a leading role in the British television series, Humans. The premise centers on a world where the latest invention is made up of anthropomorphic robots that every family wants, which changes the way of life for most people. This allowed for themes of artificial intelligence, human-robot relationships, etc.
Gemma Chan portrayed Anita / Mia, a synth that was sold as new but is actually a purpose-built conscious synth. The show featured a solid cast, intriguing twists and turns, and even earned a BAFTA victory during its airing.
