Here are 30 ways to make the most of a summer in Houston with kids

d3sign/Getty ImagesIt’s summer vacation, y’all! As a kid, I loved summer vacation because it was a glorious, wonderful, and completely unstructured two months vacation. As a mom, however, the thought of two months of unstructured time is actually incredibly intimidating!
We’ve put together a list of Houston summer things to do that you can bookmark and pull out of your back pocket when you need a little help figuring out how to fill those long summer days. We hope you can try an activity or two {or three!} from this list and that you all have the best time making memories together this summer! Good summer!
- Head to your local library and complete their summer reading challenge. Most public libraries also have a calendar of free events posted on their websites – definitely worth checking out!
- Schedule a beach trip and start a new seashell/driftwood collection.
- Fill up your water bottles and head to a Park you have never visited before.
- Consider investing in a family subscription to Houston Zoo, Houston Museum of Natural ScienceWhere Children’s Museum. A few visits over the summer and you’ve already got your money back!
- Head to a local wading pool and pack a picnic!
- Have an appointment with your grandchild(ren).
- Host a Day “Yes” With your family.
- Prepare treats for your neighbors.
- Have a family game/movie night and a family sleepover afterwards.
- Watch a show at Miller Open Air Theater.
- Go pick some fruit or veg from a local farm.
- Visit a family member at work (bonus points if you bring them lunch!).
- Plant flowers or start a vegetable garden together.
- Have a water gun battle outside.
- Watch a sunrise or sunset together.
- Enjoy a night under the stars at George Observatory.
- Let your children prepare lunch or dinner for the family.
- Go on a family bike ride.
- Camp indoors and make delicious indoor s’mores!
- Have a sleepover with friends or your cousins!
- Enjoy “summertime” treats together: corn on the cob, popsicles and watermelon are just a few ideas.
- Unplug from electronics for a day (no TVs, phones or tablets- uh!).
- Get snow cones or buy ice cream from an ice cream truck.
- Help mom or dad wash a car.
- Fly with the Lone Star Flight Museum for their #PlaneAmazing Summer Programs!
- Make a fun summer DIY– bubble art is really cool! Or you can paint a “pet” rock!
- Go see a movie Showboat Drive-In Theater in Hockley, Texas.
- Volunteer as a family.
- Encourage the ‘Stros to Minute Maid Park.
- Go fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing or paddle-boarding!
